Daoyin Scotland
Daoyin Scotland Training Academy Qigong is the modern umbrella term for the numerous health and self-cultivation systems originating from China and Daoyin is the oldest and most diverse category of these systems. The Daoyin Scotland Training Academy incorporates exercises from three different but related systems. The largest group of these three systems is from Daoyin Yangsheng Gong, created by Professor Zhang Guangde at the Beijing University of Physical Education in the mid-1970s. Prof. Zhang took the ancient health exercises and updated them by incorporating modern scientific concepts of anatomical and physiological knowledge from Western medicine into traditional Chinese medicinal theories and cultural beliefs. Daoyin Yangsheng Gong takes as its core dialectical treatment and practice according to particular illness. It adopts the practice of yi (attention), qi (breath/energy) and xing (movement) as its method and aims at disease prevention and maintaining health and longevity. The second group is the Daoist Xuanwu Pai Daoyin from Wudang mountain. Wudang has been a sacred Daoist mountain for over a thousand years. The priests there developed many martial and health systems over that time. Although Five Animal Daoyin are common throughout China, the Xuanwu Pai version of the animals is very different because it is based on Daoist iconic imagery. The last group is the Faulkner Stress Management system. This is a branch of Daoyin Yangsheng Gong. Gordon Faulkner, a disciple of Prof. Zhang, was tasked with creating Daoyin routines to deal specifically with what was deemed required from a Western perspective. Stress was top of the list.
